Elkins School District has submitted a waiver request to the Arkansas Department of Education that, if granted, will solidify the plan to make-up the school days that students missed due to inclement weather in January.  We have included some bullet points below to outline the key components of the shift to the new calendar. - We will transition to the Arkansas Department of Education's "Alternate" school calendar which is predicated on counting the cumulative instructional hours a student receives during the school year rather than counting instructional days. - We will use previously designated possible make-up days on February 19, 2024 and March 29, 2024.  Elkins School District will be in session on those dates and students need to attend classes on those days. - The other days that students missed will not be required to be made up in this new plan because the district, with those make-up days and our other total cumulative hours of face-to-face instruction for students, is well over the minimum number of hours that are required by our State guidelines. - With the new alternate calendar (assuming no further days are missed due to inclement weather) the last day for students in the 2023-2024 school year will be May 22, 2024.   - On the new version of the calendar we would also have some flexibility to use a small number of AMI days should we have more bad weather. - See the proposed calendar here: https://trst.in/QSqrLq * Please keep in mind that if the waiver request to modify the school calendar is denied by the State Board of Education we will be required to stay on our current calendar and make up all remaining required days onsite which would push the last student day of classes for the semester to June 3, 2024.  The communication that we have received from the Arkansas Department of Education is that there is a very high probability that the waiver request will be approved, but we won't be able to confirm that until the State Board of Education meets later this month. - Should you have questions please feel free to contact Elkins School Superintendent Jeremy Mangrum at (479) 643-2172 or by email at jmangrum@elkinsdistrict.org #ElkPride
